Responsibility of the Village Police
One of their responsibilities is to ensure the safety of the people and their property in the rural areas. To fulfill this responsibility, each Union Parishad has appointed Village Police and Dafadar. The work of the Village Police and Dafadar is to provide security for the villages and village police of the Union and to help the police in suppressing crime as much as possible. If any suspicious person or any situation arises in the Union that may disturb the peace for any reason, the Village Police and Dafadar will inform the OC of the police station and report to him at least once in 15 days. If there is any fear of any epidemic in the Union or if there is any possibility of damage to any dam or irrigation project or if any property of the Union Parishad is illegally occupied, the Union Parishad must be informed immediately. Moreover, if there is any damage to the railway line, telephone or telegram or electric line, tube well and other government property, the public or the Village Police and Dafadar will inform the Union Parishad. The Union Parishad will inform the concerned authorities according to the investigation. In some cases, the village police and the dafadars can arrest without the order and warrant of the magistrate. He can arrest the following persons without the permission of the magistrate and without any warrant;
a) A person who is involved in any crime admissible in court or against whom there is a reasonable charge.
b) If a person is in possession of illegal housebreaking equipment;
c) A person who is adjudged as an offender under the Court of Criminal Procedure, 1998 or by any order of the Government.
d) A person has in his possession any article or thing which is suspected to be stolen property or who is reasonably suspected of having committed any crime with such article.
e) If a person escapes or attempts to escape from any lawful custody, and if a person is reasonably suspected of having escaped from the Bangladesh Army, Navy or Air Force;
f) If any person escapes or attempts to escape from any lawful custody, and any person is duly notified that he has escaped from the Bangladesh Army, Navy or Air Force;
e) If any person obstructs any government officer or employee in the discharge of his official duties.
